One of the great things about being a boutique music school is that we can support underserved areas of the Vancouver music landscape. When we first met Kelsey, we were blown away not only by her piano playing ability, but also by her metal growls. After receiving a large amount of word-of-mouth interest from friends and acquaintances wanting to sing hard rock and heavy metal music, we realized we needed to launch a rock/metal class.
We decided to host a free info session for the newly christened Metal Choir! We posted it on Reddit to drum up some interest, but it went way further than we expected. Not only did we get a lot of enthusiastic comments, but Vancouver is Awesome also approached us and wrote an article about us.
A Vancouver music school is starting a metal choir – Vancouver is Awesome
Turns out we chose one of the snowiest days of the year to kick off our Metal Choir info sessions. It was a really bad storm, but that didn’t stop our dedicated metalheads! We had a great turn out for the first info session. However, because there were a lot of people who couldn’t make it, we decided to host a second info session one week later.
What a difference a week made! While we were patiently waiting for the second info session, Trevor Dineen, host of Now or Never on CBC Radio, contacted us about doing a profile of our new project. Since we had the second info lined up, it worked out really well. We were able to record audio of the second session, including both Kelsey and Chersea demonstrating their best growls.

It’s now January and we are starting our first Metal Choir session next week. We’ve got 13 participants signed up, which is a delightfully evil number, but we are still taking new registrations until January 10.
